After School Care
The YMCA of Austin Afterschool Program is offered at Blackshear Elementary The afterschool care program offers a constructive balance of counselor led activities and free time for child exploration. Daily theme activities include arts and crafts, science/math activities, nutrition/wellness activities, character developments/assets and literacy. In addition, the Y delivers CATCH physical activity lessons daily and has made a commitment to meet the Y's Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA). Lastly, there is always time for homework, a nutritious afternoon snack, and outside time on the playground. The end of each afterschool day will include Centers: Board Game Blvd., Hard Hat Highway (building), Craft Court (art), Drama Drive, and Literary Lane. Children are divided into age-appropriate groups for many of the daily activities. Special day-long programs, called All Day Cares, are available for most school holidays (see calendars below) and for all early release days. Care on these days is included with your monthly fees. As with all of our programs, the after school program emphasizes our five character values: respect, responsibility, honesty, faith, and caring. In addition to the Y's character values, the afterschool curriculum is built on the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) standards and the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets. For more information, contact the Program Services Branch at 512-236-9622. Financial assistance for the YMCA of Austin's afterschool care program is available. Additional Notes
For the 2015-16 School Year, Parents have the option of the Creative Action after school program. This is not your average after school care! Professional Teaching Artists lead creativity classes that include visual art, filmmaking, music, movement, puppetry, creative writing, acting, and more! Creative Action After School develops a “4C” student who is a Creative Artist, Courageous Ally, Critical Thinker, and Confident Leader. Families receive monthly e-newsletters with photos and updates from the program. At least twice a year family and friends are invited to “program sharings”–unique events where students share and celebrate their projects. Fridays feature Creativity in Action! Students work in teams to design and implement special projects using art, creativity, and imagination to improve the world around them. Current examples include a “Recycla-bot” robot that eats your recyclables, a school-wide musical parade, and community murals. This program runs every day of the AISD calendar from 2:00 – 6:00 pm and incorporates hands-on arts activities to spark creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking skills through an exploration of the “sensory alphabet.” New World Kids is currently offered at Gullett Elementary and Becker Elementary, but may be expanded to other sites. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, email Florinda Bryant, Company Manager at Florinda@creativeaction.org or 512-442-8773 x107.
