BIG is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational, training, and professional development organization that is an advocate for jobs, education, career advancement, housing and health services on behalf of the 3.0 million African Americans employed and retirees, in federal, state, local governments and military services. Our organizational structure is comprised of 300 chapters strategically located throughout the United States. BIG cultivates a desire to succeed, stimulate personal development and professionalism, and continuously focuses on achieving equality of opportunity for all Americans.
The Austin Chapter of Blacks In Government celebrated its 30th anniversary on September 1st, 2014. Austin Chapter received its National Charter September 1st, 1984.
In 1984 Blackshear Elementary was selected by the Austin Chapter as our Adopt-A-School Partner. The Austin Chapter has continued to provide support through its Community Outreach Program with schools supplies, refreshing snacks for the STAAR Testing, sponsored families for Christmas/Thanksgiving with food and gifts, an provided cameras for the media project and photography class.
